Successful Yard Sale in Jerusalem

We have just returned home from a busy morning at the AACI sale in Jerusalem. It was special to have some people who have seen our blog posts and FaceBook posts come over to say hello. Even nicer to hear some say they enjoy our posts. Thank you to all who came to say "HI!" we appreciate it very much.

We have sold out most of the white shirts, we just have one boys size 14 long sleeved white shirt left. We sold most of our sets of linen, we now have just two sets left. 
The copper Pesach Sedar plate has sold to a nice lady.

Thank you to all those who gave positive input to our books. We very much appreciate all the feedback. To those who have seen our posts promoting our books, thank you for letting us know. It helps to know that our posts on social media are being seen and even liked or enjoyed.

Progress on the Hebrew Version of our Book

 

A few months ago, we brought out our first children's book, "Tuvia Finds His Freedom". With all the excitement about our bridal gowns I have almost forgotten the book. Thank goodness my husband has been hard at work behind the scenes. 

Our good friend Dana Baum has done a superb job of translating the book from English into Hebrew. Then came a challenge as to how to add the vowels or Nikud. We looked into many options and purchased a program only to find it did not work quite as advertised. After lots of hard work, many many hours of laboriously adding in the vowels, it is complete.

After adding all the vowels, next came formatting the manuscript to look just like the English one. The cover has been quite a challenge. Since the cover design was done using a template on CreateSpace, we spent time figuring out if it could be reversed at all. Our only solution was to design a new cover which my husband has done using Photoshop.

We are not yet sure if the book will print in the direction we intend it to as required for a Hebrew book. We are waiting for the CreateSpace team to review the manuscript and cover. If it passes their checks we move on to ordering our proof copy.

WOW!! We are much, much closer to having both an English and Hebrew version of the same book. This means that for those of you who would like to help your children improve Hebrew or maintain their English or ensure the level of both languages is on a par, you will have a fun way to do so. The Next Step in the Process of Our Book

 

Each day there is a new development in the progress of our new book. Yesterday we had an offer to begin selling our book in a bookstore in Tzfat. Stay tuned for details as to when it will be available in Tzfat. 

Today we have another development. We have received the translation of our book into Hebrew. The amazing thing about social networking is that as we print out the pages and read the Hebrew version, we are in touch with Dana Baum, our translator who is providing some fascinating insight into the choice of the level of Hebrew she used.

For those who wondered if our book will be available in Hebrew, we are excited to let you know that we are a whole lot closer to the Hebrew version being available.

Once we have finished reading the translated copy, our next step will be to begin the process of formatting it into manuscript form to be printed as a book. This will include inserting the Nikudot, for which we still need the appropriate software.

It is quite amazing to think when I made Aliyah, I knew the Alef Beit and a few words but hardly anything more. Now we are contributing to a book in Hebrew for kids with the same in English. OK, we did not do the translation, but we are reading the translation and understanding it, together with gaining more vocabulary. Aliyah is full of surprises. If you had told me when I was preparing to come to Israel that we'd produce a kids book in Hebrew, I'm not sure I would have believed it to be possible.

Will Tuvia Finds His Freedom be Available in Hebrew?

Someone asked if our new book "Tuvia Finds His Freedom" will be available in Hebrew or only in English. We had another inquiry as to how we intend to reach Israeli kids if the book is in English.

I am happy to say we have an answer for both of these questions.

Our book is in the process of being translated into Hebrew. In fact, we recently received the following message from our friend Dana Baum who is doing our translation.

"Hi Shoshana, good news - I'm almost finished translating"

We look forward to letting everyone know when the translation will be complete. Once the book is translated we do, of course, have to make sure the formatting is the same as the English version. We have a bit of work still ahead of us. But yes, with Hashem's help, the book will be available in Hebrew as well as in English.

Pets and Animals in Israel

There are many details to get used to when moving countries. Considering having pets, finding lost animals and how to care for them is another factor that one takes for granted in the country one comes from but does need to learn when moving to Israel.

If you are used to where vets are located, where to find pet shops, how to get in touch with your local SPCA and what animals are permitted as pets, you will have some learning to do in Israel. In some areas, a vet is easy to find while in others, vets might be in a neighbouring village or town. The rules, laws and procedures can be very, very different to what you are used to, wherever you came from.

So what do you do if you would like a pet? What do you do if you come across a lost animal? Will you know how to take care of him / her in the best possible way?

One couple found they had quite a lot of questions when moving to an apartment with a small garden. They had a few un-expected visitors and needed to learn quickly the best possible way to help them. You can learn more of their experience and what effort they went to in order to find out the appropriate intervention for Israel.
